Anyone who lives in the Atlanta area knows that Spring can bring about severe storms and even tornadoes.
Considering how warm the winter season has been thus far, storms may be on the horizon at any time. Severe thunderstorms and straight line winds often result in roof damage caused by high winds, fallen tree limbs, hail, or even heavy amounts of rain if your roof is aging or hasn’t been properly maintained. When you notice water leaking into the interior of your home, it’s time to take action. Our Atlanta roofing professionals have a few tips to help you keep the damage to a minimum until help arrives.
Locate the point of entry.
It’s natural to think that the leak is located at the point where water is coming into your home, but this isn’t usually the case. Water migrates to the seam in homes that have plywood beneath the shingles, so the actual leak may be in a different area of the roof.
Reduce the damage and number of leaks by finding the spot that seems to be the wettest. Leaks often occur around light fixtures, air conditioning registers, or other “weak” spots after pooling up in attic spaces. In many cases homeowners will notice water leaking in more than one location in its efforts to escape. In order to keep damage to a minimum, try to locate the spot where the ceiling appears to be wettest. By poking a hole in the most apparent leak and placing a bucket directly underneath to catch the water, you can prevent damage to floors, furnishings, and other items while reducing the number of leaks.
Make a quick repair until professionals arrive.
After you have determined where exactly the leak is located, you can make a temporary repair to prevent further damage until roofers arrive. If it’s possible to get on the roof, place a tarp over the leak, making sure the tarp extends over the ridge line or peak of the roof by about four inches so water can’t seep underneath, before securing with roofing nails. Also use roofing tape or cement to patch the leak either from the inside or outside.
Once you notice roof leaks, take action immediately to make a quick do-it-yourself repair.
